Fintra Beach is one of Killybegs’ most cherished natural attractions—a stunning, Blue Flag beach located just a few minutes’ drive west of the town centre. Nestled in a sheltered bay and backed by soft sand dunes, Fintra (or Fhionntraí in Irish) offers breathtaking views across Donegal Bay, including glimpses of Slieve League cliffs in the distance on clear days.

What to Expect:

  • Golden Sands & Shallow Waters: Ideal for families, especially with young children, as the shallow slope into the water makes it safe for paddling and swimming.
  • Cleanliness & Water Quality: Its Blue Flag status reflects its high standards for water quality, safety, and environmental management.
  • Scenic Beauty: With a wide expanse of beach at low tide and dramatic coastal surroundings, it’s a favourite for walkers, photographers, and sunset-watchers.
  • Accessibility: There’s a car park just above the beach, with a short walkway leading down. While it’s not fully wheelchair accessible, it is generally easy to reach.

Though there are no major facilities directly on the beach (like cafés or changing rooms), Killybegs town is close by for food, shops, and accommodations. Lifeguards are typically on duty during the summer season, and dogs are allowed (but should be kept under control, especially during peak times).

Fintra is a peaceful, scenic spot perfect for relaxing, swimming, or taking in the raw coastal beauty of Donegal.

Getting There

It is located about a 10 minute drive from Killybegs.  There is a small car park above the beach with steps leading down to the sand. While the descent is steep, it’s manageable for most visitors (Note it is not suitable for camper vans). Wheelchair access is limited. During the busy summer months, the parking area can fill quickly, so early arrival is recommended getting there.

Beach Lifeguards Lifeguards will be on duty on this beach – from June until September. Hours of Work: 12.00 noon – 18.30.
